Dr. Gwen Ngo has resided in the Columbia & Silver Spring area for nearly three decades. Having attended the Blair Magnet program for Math and Science, she continued her studies at both the University of Maryland at College Park and UMBC where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Subsequently, she attended dental school at the University of Maryland at Baltimore where she finished her training and received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree.
As a member or recipient of dozens of professional organizations or achievement certificates including selected as an area's "Top Dentist" in 2008 and noted for her contributions to the "Maryland Healthcare for All" coalition, Dr. Gwen Ngo admits, "that doesn't necessarily make you a better or more caring dentist"..."It's what you do when the patient sits in the chair that counts". As evidence of this, she has made treating foster home children, neglected or troubled teenagers in group homes, and financially disadvantaged kids all on medical assistance as an integral component to her practice. "These individuals often pose a unique challenge because for the most part, they've never had consistent or proper dental care." In fact many of these kids come to Dr. Gwen Ngo's office for the first time ever seeing a dentist. Thus, whereby a typical patient who's had regular professional treatment presents with limited dental problems, these patients often have rampant decay or require extensive oral reconstruction.
Many dentist go through a career without ever focusing on this specialized patient pool. However, Dr. Ngo has extended her commitment to these patients particularly after the well publicized death of a 12 year old Maryland child who developed a tooth abscess in which the infection spread to his brain. This 2007 incident sparked national attention towards dental awareness and accessiblity.
Thus, although the dental office is a prime location to educate patients, Dr. Gwen Ngo does not limit sharing her knowledge or concerns strictly in the office. "I try to go wherever there is a need, desire, or request in order to promote good oral healthcare."
